Choosing a Mattress
Okay, so the time has come to switch out your old mattress with a new one, which leaves us with the question: how to choose a mattress that will be good for us and our specific needs? A Latex mattress? A memory foam mattress? A mattress with springs or without springs? How will you know which mattress is the perfect fit for you and your specific needs? What are the advantages of each mattress, and which one you should choose? Throughout this instruction, we will try to make order out of this mess.
Is replacing your mattress really that important?
We spend a third of our lives sleeping on our mattress, and a good night’s sleep helps us get ready for the following day, in fact, our mattress will determine how our day will look like….. Did you have a good night’s rest? If you didn’t sleep well the night before expect to feel tired, a little grumpy, and not focused or peaceful, in the end, a bad night’s sleep just doesn’t lead to good things. On the other hand, if you experienced a good uninterrupted night’s sleep your whole day will be different, you will feel more awake and relaxed throughout the day. Choosing the right mattress for you comes with a lot of thought. Our mattress affects our health so it’s very important which one we end up choosing, it’s better to seek advice from an expert when it comes to buying a new mattress.
When do we need to switch out our old mattress?
A mattress is usually replaced after a period of 10-15 years (average), but sleep experts advise switching every 8-9 years. If you’re over the age of 40 experts advise you to switch even more periodically, because as we get older our bodies become more sensitive to minor changes. So even if you wake up with back pains with a relatively new mattress, the time may have come for you to switch your mattress. In addition, after a few years, our mattress becomes heavier ….. Why you ask? Because over the years our mattress retains our sweat, dust mites, even skin particles and dirt. Therefore, it’s important to pay very close attention when purchasing a new mattress. Buying a mattress isn’t only based on the model and price comparison. You should also test the mattress by lying on the mattress in different positions and also understanding which materials are used to make your mattress because if you think about it your mattress is going to be with you for a long time.
So what do we need to check while purchasing a new mattress?
-
Who do we buy from-
the first step in purchasing a mattress is that the mattress was manufactured by a serious and reliable company and that the warranty given is at least 10 years. If you purchase your mattress on the internet, you should read the mattress details very carefully, if you go to a store, we recommend asking the seller to see a model of the mattress cut in order to see which materials make up the mattress you’re going to buy.
-
Height of the mattress-
It’s very important to take into account the height of the mattress, that’s because if a mattress is too high it will be hard for you to climb on top and if it’s too low it will be hard for you to get up from. Measure your current mattress, then calculate how many inches you would like to add/reduce and only then search for your new mattress.
-
Type of material –
there are two types of mattresses: a spring mattress and a Foam mattress. There are Pocket spring mattresses as well, think really good before starting your search for a new mattress, this way you will be more focused on what you want to buy. Research shows that in recent years most people want to buy an orthopedic mattress without springs.
-
Upper layers, lower layers, and thickness-
when buying a mattress you should look at a mattress cut in order to see the thickness of each layer, what type of foam martial, etc. It is advised that the lower layers of the mattress will be made from harder materials and that the upper layers be softer. Either way, it’s not recommended to buy a mattress made from one material, in this type of mattress you will be left with a hammock-like shape over time, which is the worst.
-
fabric type-
Another equally important factor to consider while buying a mattress is to check the fabric type – fabrics that have airways prevent unpleasant odors, mold, and moisture. A good fabric type is made from Aloe Vera and if the mattress also has a peripheral fabric designed into it, to ventilate the mattress (and prevent moisture accumulation and sweat at the heart of the mattress), then you have made a good deal.
What you should know before buying a mattress?
Our advice: check the following before purchasing your new mattress:
- Is the mattress a two-sided mattress? Back in the old days, we needed to flip our mattress every two weeks or once a month, today we can purchase a NO FLIP mattress, these types of mattresses don’t need to be flipped in order to air them out, they have their own airways: airways or a special fabric cover.
- Is it possible for one mattress two have two types of degree firmness on each side of the bed? Today you can ask for a mattress that has two types of degree firmness on each side of the bed (on the right and left side of the bed). This can be done to innerspring mattresses with two separate spring cores or to orthopedic mattresses without springs (foam mattresses), and also in mattresses with pocket springs.
- Is there a possibility for a home trial period and if so, how long? you need a period of 14 to 30 nights because even good things take time to get used to…During the trial period, can you remove the nylon cover or do you need to sleep on it? Sleeping on a mattress covered in nylon will feel the same no matter if the mattress cost $400 or $1400, it’s very hard to feel the mattress when it’s covered with nylon.
- Is it possible at the end of the trial period to return the mattress and receive a refund, or is the customer “charged” for using their product?
- How long is the warranty given for the mattress? There are companies that give 10 years and there are companies that also give 15 years, 18 years, or even 20 years. The longer the warranty the better, this indicates that the company trusts its products, although sometimes it is worth reading the fine print and knowing exactly what is included in the warranty.
- A promise to relieve back pain? There is no such thing! A mattress seller isn’t an orthopedist. And there is no such thing as a mattress model that will solve your back problems, your pain is not like the pain of others, so mattress A is not like mattress B, in order to get rid of back pain go to a professional. However, it can be said that replacing an old mattress with a new one can greatly improve your quality of sleep and can improve back pain that isn’t caused by an illness or a spinal problem.
